Susan has always found herself outside exploring the wilds, whether from Oklahoma, where she was born, or in Georgia where the creeks, meadows, and forests were always her home. She studied nature throughout her school days and continued to follow the path of Nature to the river lands of Athens, GA where she studied at U.G.A receiving degrees in both Ecology and Entomology, and an M.Ed with a focus on Environmental Education, naturally :)  

After her studies and international travels with the University she moved to Atlanta for a Naturalist teaching position at Fernbank Museum.  While at Fernbank she was able to travel more in various instructor classes that took her to the Galapagos Islands, Madagascar, as well as throughout Central America.  Susan has been fortunate to teach in a variety of educational settings, from public schools to nature centers, with a wide range of ages during her 20 years of teaching.  Susan also co-founded Sound of Nature School in Atlanta in 2015 which started as a Reggio-Emilia inspired Music and Nature preschool and grew by demand into a Homeschool program for students K-12 all over Atlanta with numerous offerings from naturalist classes, history, music studio experiences and more.  Susan is also an herbalist and energy worker in the Athens Community and has taught at conferences around the SouthEast as well as offering a 6 month plant medicine course here in Athens for adults. 

Susan and her family moved to Athens in the summer of 2021 and enjoys being in this town again immensely and the freedom and connection that both homeschooling and the natural life affords.  Susan is excited to continue to share in her passions with her classes and enjoy the incredible community that is Firefly, with her children.
