Firefly is a community that values family involvement and fellowship with one another. Because we are not a school, but a non-profit parent cooperative for independent homeschoolers, we do not have paid staff members and we need help from all of our families throughout the school year. It is important to us that all members are actively building and investing in our community as we work together in educating our students.
In order to participate in Firefly, every family should commit to 5 or 6 credits worth of volunteer responsibilities. Families can fulfill these credits with a combination of various tasks:
Setup Crew (1 credit per shift) Thursdays from 9:00-10:00am - Tasks include the setup of tables and chairs in each classroom, stocking each room with tablecloths and cleaning supplies, carrying storage bins downstairs, and distributing items to classrooms.
Cleanup Crew (1 credit per shift) Thursdays from 3:00-4:00pm - Tasks include collapsing and storing tables and chairs, washing dishes, wiping tablecloths, sweeping floors, carrying storage bins upstairs at end of day, and other general cleanup tasks.
Event Staff (3 credits per shift) Thursday evenings from 6:00-9:00pm and some TBD afternoon events - Tasks include activity setup, snack setup, monitoring/assisting students throughout the event, cleanup at end of event.
Event Snacks (1 credit per shift) At-home task - Provide a baked or prepared snack for the evening events; can be dropped off during the class day
Name Tag Lamination (3 credits) At-home task - Cut, sort, and laminate nametags prior to the start of classes (a laminator can be loaned out for this task and instructions will be provided). This task MUST be completed between January 1-5, 2022.
Community Center Deep Clean (2 credits) - Date/Time TBD - Once per semester deep scrub of the tables, chairs, etc. Aiming for early April time frame.

School Photos - We would like to have class photos of each grade level taken by someone with professional photography experience, if possible.
Field Trip Coordinator - We would like someone who is willing to plan and execute field trips for Firefly families. Co-directors will make a team decision if multiple individuals are interested.
Substitutes - If your schedule is flexible and you may be able to fill in for additional setup/cleanup/event shifts in the event that someone needs to cancel, please let us know if you can be placed on our emergency backup list. If a substitute is called upon and fulfills more than 6 credits, your family will be invited to register early (before other returning families) the following school year.
Any other talents that you can donate? Let us know! Your family could be given volunteer credit if you can fulfill a need that we are able to utilize at some point in the semester. (Example: one family has fulfilled their responsibilities by DJ’ing our Firefly Soiree).
The choice to opt out of volunteer responsibilities is provided for those who work full-time, those with physical or health limitations, and those with strict childcare limitations.
Cost to Opt Out: $65 per semester (effective January 2022)
Deadline to Opt Out: January 6, 2022 (First Day of Semester Classes) - Families will not be permitted to opt out past this deadline, and must fulfill the commitments for which they have signed up.
Q: Can my child(ren) attend my volunteer shift with me?
A: In most cases, yes. One classroom is set aside for students to gather during setup/cleanup where your child(ren) can quietly entertain themselves. Evening events are often another opportunity to volunteer while your children participate in the activity (movie night/game night/etc).
Q: Can any adult from my household fulfill our volunteer responsibilities?
A: Yes. Any combination of adults and shifts can be used to fulfill the credit hours.
Q: What if I can’t make it to my scheduled shift?
A: We understand that life happens. A family illness or emergency may prevent you from fulfilling your volunteer shift for that week. If an occasion comes up when you need someone to take your place, you can first attempt to swap slots on SignUp Genius. You can locate this feature when logged into your account and viewing the sign up. Under your name, you will see the option to request a swap. From there, you will be able to select one or more persons whom you wish to swap slots with. If you need further assistance, or if you do not have time to request a swap (due to emergency) please notify Amanda as soon as possible, so that a replacement may be found and we are not short-handed.
Q: If I am scheduled to volunteer on the same day as an evening event, but I cancel at the last minute due to family illness, can my children still attend the scheduled evening event?
A: No, they may not. Please consult our illness policy.
Q: What if I fulfill more than the required minimum credit hours?
A: Families who go above & beyond their required committments may be invited to register early (before other returning families) next school year!
